To those who believe that the Christ has already come in the person of Jesus and to those who still patiently wait for the Messiah, Christian Science offers great hope. It does this by revealing the nature of Christ as the divine idea of God, reflecting the omnipresence of God. Wherever God is, the healing Christ is, and God is everywhere.
This teaching in no way subtracts from the godliness of Jesus, who presented the Christ for the spiritual betterment of mankind. Indeed, it was Jesus' understanding of the omnipresence of the Christ that enabled him to prove this presence in the works of healing he performed, which received their impulse from Deity. He said (John 5:30), "I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me."
In a chapter entitled "Emergence into Light" in "Retrospection and Introspection," Mary Baker Eddy tells of her awakening to spiritual reality and writes (p. 23): "The character of the Christ was illuminated by the midnight torches of Spirit. My heart knew its Redeemer." She adds: "Being was beautiful, its substance, cause, and currents were God and His idea. I had touched the hem of Christian Science."
