MAN'S REASON FOR EXISTING

From the October 1960 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science enables one to enjoy a purposeful life by revealing man's reason for existing. He who understands this revealed truth and conforms himself to it is sure to have a positive and rewarding purpose in life.

In accord with the first chapter of Genesis, which contains the true account of creation, Christian Science teaches that God made man and that He made him in His image and likeness. It follows that in God's purpose for man is to be found man's reason for existing. What is the divine purpose? We read in Isaiah (43:7,) "I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him." As the function of an image is to reflect the original, man exists to manifest God's glory, to reflect His being.

Mrs. Eddy defines God in seven synonymous terms that are clearly stated or implied in the Bible: Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love. A study of these synonyms enables one to see that man exists to express the intelligence of Mind, the power of Spirit, the harmony of Soul; to evidence the divine law and order of Principle; to manifest the vitality of Life; to bear witness to Truth; and to radiate the love of Love.
