UNIVERSAL LOVE, THE ETERNAL BUILDER

From the October 1960 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A familiar Bible verse reads (Ps. 127:1), "Except the Lord' build the house, they labour in vain that build it." In Christian Science the Lord, or God, is understood to be universal Life, Truth, and Love, the omnipotent and omnipresent All, and there is no opposing power or force. True building is a spiritual activity, based upon divine law.

Universal Love inspired two of the grandest movements of human history: these constructive movements were the founding of Christianity by Christ Jesus and the discovery of Christian Science and establishment of the Church of Christ, Scientist, by Mrs. Eddy.

Jesus' love for humanity drew the multitudes to him to listen to and learn from his sermons and parables and to have their sick healed. The love that Jesus taught and practiced was derived from his understanding of God as universal Love. He urged the disciples to love each other, saying (John 15:9, 12): "As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. . . . This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you."
