Ideas, like rays of light, need to be brought into focus at a certain point in order that they may provide enlightenment. Christian Science does this with precision and thus makes the light of Christ, Truth, intelligently available to all. Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 504), "The rays of infinite Truth, when gathered into the focus of ideas, bring light instantaneously, whereas a thousand years of human doctrines, hypotheses, and vague conjectures emit no such effulgence."
Jesus said (John 8:12), "I am the light of the world," and a little later he described himself to his opponents as "a man that hath told you the truth." He was not the first one to bring the light of Christ, Truth, to the world, for the Christ is the eternal impartation of God. Prophets and patriarchs before him had glimpsed the presence of Truth. Moses had, in a measure, brought rays of Truth into focus in the Ten Commandments, which imply the relation of man to law and thus hint the true order of existence. Wisdom had been expressed even among pagan nations, and teachings of genuine good had brought a degree of enlightenment that has never been forgotten. But the power to set aside false laws and prove the healing beneficence of God's laws was not present because the focus of these rays of Truth was lacking.
In the teachings of Jesus this focus was perfected. Others had glimpsed the protecting fatherhood of God, but Jesus declared Him to be the only Father of man; this related the thought of God's fatherhood to the spiritual truth of man's sonship, and the light which this focus brought to the world healed the sick and the sinful and destroyed fear.
