"THE WILL OF THE FATHER"

From the August 1960 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In Chapter 5 of II Kings we read that Naaman, a leper, "captain of the host of the king of Syria," set out for Samaria to seek from the prophet Elisha the healing of leprosy. Apparently Naaman had formulated the manner in which he expected to be treated by the prophet—something which befitted his high rank. When, however, Elisha did not appear in person but sent a messenger to bid Naaman wash in Jordan seven times, Naaman was wroth and even expressed contempt for the waters of Israel. His servants, wiser than their master, prevailed upon him to humble himself, to subjugate his human will and to carry out the injunction of the man of God. In complying with this, Naaman found himself healed of the leprosy. Moreover, he acknowledged God as the one God "in all the earth."

Mankind lose sight of the verities that there is but one infinite divine Mind and that man, created in God's image and likeness, is actuated by spiritual ideas alone; hence he knows no will but God's. Human will has no fixity; it is always unreliable, inconstant, and without a fundamental cause. Although purporting to belong to man, human will is actually a usurper which would rob the individual of his divine heritage.

Christian Science teaches the necessity of recognizing God as the only lawgiver and of acknowledging His perfect, spiritual law as a criterion of conduct for humanity. Omniscience, denoting all knowledge, excludes even the remotest possibility of another intelligence with which it can share its wisdom. Thus all thought, motivation, and action derive from the one spiritual source, God, who is indivisible and omnipotent.
