THE "PRESSURE OF THE APOSTOLIC COMMAND"

From the January 1961 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Today scientists who deal with various materials make experiments in tensions and pressures, stresses and strains. Many of the products with which we are familiar are graded according to tests that indicate degrees of strength and endurance under use. In these days there is also much conversation about pressures of a mental nature, such as international pressure, business pressure, pressure of schoolwork and of other daily tasks.

Christian Science gives an answer to high pressures of tension and low pressures of apathy felt in human experience. In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy says (p. 451), "Christian Scientists must live under the constant pressure of the apostolic command to come out from the material world and be separate."

The worldly thought would constantly educate us into material views of everything. But the command "to come out from the material world and be separate" is a spiritual demand to know and do the will of God. It is in essence the first two commandments of the Mosaic Decalogue.
