My first testimony appeared in a Christian Science Sentinel in 1915 when I was a young student of Christian Science. As I look back over the years since then, I realize how very much I have been blessed and how many healings I have had. What I am most grateful for is the finding of Christian Science when I was still in my teens. To have thus early found stability and peace of mind is indeed a priceless gift. I was beginning to feel the restlessness and uncertainties that so often disturb youth; and although earnestly seeking to understand God, I could not decide to join any church, for none seemed to have the answer to all my questions.
When a friend introduced me to Christian Science, I did not turn to it first for physical healing but for a better understanding of God; nevertheless as I studied Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy I saw that healing must include the destruction of all that is unlike God. I had been considered a delicate child and had spent many months in bed with two recurring illnesses; but as soon as I accepted this Science as the truth, I gave up all material remedies, once and for all, and these illnesses just dropped away and have never returned.
When I was twenty-one I contracted a severe case of measles and became delirious. A doctor was summoned in accordance with the law relating to contagious disease; but a friend had already obtained help in Science for me, and before the doctor came I was so much recovered that he said he would not return unless sent for. The healing was rapid, and in about a week's time I was back at my work, which was gardening, digging and doing other heavy work. In later years I helped to nurse my niece when she had scarlet fever, and although I had not had the disease, I was protected. At this time I learned the importance of studying the Lesson-Sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly the first thing in the day.
