THE DIVINITY OF THE REVELATION

From the February 1961 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christianity is unquestionably divine in origin. Christ Jesus emphasized this fact when he said (John 5: 30): "I can of mine own self do nothing"; and (John 7:16), "My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me." These statements make it plain that the wisdom Jesus enunciated and the healings he accomplished were evidences of the divine revelation of Truth to his consciousness.

Because of their material-mindedness the priests and Pharisees were blinded to the divinity of Jesus' teachings and could not acknowledge it and so felt justified in persecuting both the Master and his followers. The zealous Saul required a tremendous confrontation of Truth before he recognized Jesus as the Messiah and his way of life as of divine origin.

The divine origin and nature of the truths of Christianity give them universal application, so that anyone who perceives and obeys them can imitate the mighty works of the Master. Jesus, the Way-shower, said to his followers (John 14:12), "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also." We owe Jesus an incalculable debt for his spiritual perception of the revelation of Christianity, for his constant and unwavering obedience to all its demands, and for the universal and selfless love that actuated his life.
