FAITH AND SPIRITUAL UNDERSTANDING

From the March 1961 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is certain that youth will advance to manhood. It is equally certain that manhood will be enriched as it preserves the vibrant, expectant qualities that characterize youth. And it is interesting to observe that the transition from youth to manhood is similar to that which occurs as we advance from a literal to a spiritual interpretation of the Bible.

"Until belief becomes faith, and faith becomes spiritual understanding," Mrs. Eddy writes on page 297 of Science and Health, "human thought has little relation to the actual or divine." This point was impressed upon me early in my experience as a Christian Scientist. While serving as First Reader in a Christian Science Society, I was called upon to heal others, and the results were satisfying and encouraging. But I found it difficult to carry on a satisfactory conversation on the subject of Christian Science because of a limited knowledge of its particular terminology, so new was I to the study of it.

The practical proofs of healing, however, awakened in me a desire to understand how the healings were accomplished and perhaps to make this my lifework. So I sought class instruction and eventually gave up my business and devoted myself wholly to the healing activity. But I still felt that there was something lacking in my approach to this work.
