SPIRITUAL FITNESS

From the March 1961 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Human thinking, embodying as it does the belief of both good and evil, needs to become spiritually fit in order to receive spiritual blessings and to enjoy them in human conditions and conduct. Mrs. Eddy writes in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health (p. 337), "For true happiness, man must harmonize with his Principle, divine Love; the Son must be in accord with the Father, in conformity with Christ."

One becomes spiritually fit to receive good when he shapes his thoughts and conduct so that they comply with spiritual requirements. One progresses in spiritual fitness and demonstration not by trying to make the teachings of Christian Science conform to his misconceptions or preconceived opinions, but by making his inward convictions and outward actions conform to the clear, unadulterated teachings of this Science.

Mrs. Eddy set high goals for her followers. In her first address in The Mother Church, May 26, 1895, she said to the members (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 110): "Beloved children, the world has need of you,—and more as children than as men and women: it needs your innocence, unselfishness, faithful affection, un-contaminated lives. You need also to watch, and pray that you preserve these virtues unstained, and lose them not through contact with the world." Then she added, "What grander ambition is there than to maintain in yourselves what Jesus loved, and to know that your example, more than words, makes morals for mankind!"
