LAYING UP TREASURES IN HEAVEN

From the March 1961 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the Bible we find this wise counsel (Matt. 6:19, 20): "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal."

What are the treasures that we can lay up in heaven? Mrs. Eddy points out some of them in her book "Pulpit and Press," in which she writes (p. 9), "Self-forgetfulness, purity, and love are treasures untold—constant prayers, prophecies, and anointings." Let us lay up these treasures moment by moment so that we may increase our offerings of "self-forgetfulness, purity, and love."

How can we demonstrate these spiritual qualities? By getting an understanding of God, Spirit, who is the only source of spiritual good. The moments, hours, and days we spend in study or quiet communion with the divine Mind, God, and in utilizing what we learn, add to our treasures of heavenly riches.
