My first healing in Christian Science was a corroboration of the efficacy of confiding all to God. My early experience had been a succession of surgical operations, and I had also suffered injuries as the result of a fall of twenty-three feet to a concrete floor. I was totally invalided twice, during which time my weight dropped to seventy pounds, and I had to learn to walk again. For years there were aftereffects, and the run-down condition of the body manifested itself in frequent colds and sore throat. I did not know what it was to go to sleep without taking sedatives.
Despite this history of illness, I had established a business on a national scale and had secured financial backing which included an adequate salary. However, at this time a young member of my family became ill with tuberculosis, requiring sanatorium care, to which a considerable portion of my income had to be devoted. The major part of the remainder of my salary went to pay the premium on a life insurance policy, which was required by my associates.
While I was traveling around the country on business I fell seriously ill; the medical diagnosis disclosed tuberculosis, which the physicians said would necessitate beginning a rest cure immediately. My situation was desperate, and the only way out that presented itself to me was through suicide, since my insurance policy contained a double indemnity clause which would permit a monthly payment for the relative who was ill. In this dilemma I turned to God and asked Him what to do. The answer came with sudden illumination, "Try Christian Science."
