IT is mandatory that each Christian Science church give at least one lecture annually. The Church Manual by Mrs. Eddy states, "The Mother Church and the branch churches shall call on the Board of Lectureship annually for one or more lectures" (Art. XXXII, Sect. 4). Whether or not a church gives more than one lecture each year, the time and place of the lecture and the preparation for the lecture are left to the demonstration of each church.
The giving of a Christian Science lecture is a means of introducing the impersonal Christ to that community. Attending a lecture is an awakening and a healing experience. We can recall the enthusiasm which greeted Jesus when he brought the Christ message to Caesarea Philippi, to Galilee, to Judea. People gathered from miles around to hear his words.
Should our enthusiasm be any less as the time approaches for the blessed experience of a lecture in our community? Should we hesitate to acquaint our neighbors and friends—to broadcast this coming event to all and issue them a warm invitation? The human ways of doing this are many and may vary in different localities, but they should never become routine. If we approach our preparation with eager enthusiasm and prayer, new and original ideas will unfold to us that will indeed arouse the slumbering thought.
