THE SPIRITUAL CONTRIBUTION OF THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE NURSE

From the October 1964 issue of The Christian Science Journal

IS not their love for each other the unbreakable link that unifies and holds together those who love God? This true love is what impels people to take specialized courses which will enable them to serve with ability and skill as Christian Science nurses.

In what is known as the Book of the Covenant we read, "Ye shall serve the Lord your God, and he shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee" (Ex. 23:25). Every student of the Bible knows that the New Testament records many of the healing works of Christ Jesus and the apostles. Spiritual light is profoundly needed that these works may be repeated today. And a nurse has the opportunity of cooperating with the practitioner, who has charge of the case, in tenderly turning the patient's thought away from the mesmerism of materiality to the recognition of divine Love's healing presence.

Authenticated testimonies of healing published in the Christian Science periodicals abundantly support the value of honoring the words of Jesus in what is known as the Lord's Prayer. Acknowledging the presence of his Father, Jesus said: "Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven"' (Matt. 6:10). This affirmation of heavenly peace is formidable under any circumstance. It is well calculated to displace and to discredit human claims of sorrow and disease. It points to a way unfettered by tragedy, to men redeemed from sin.
