Are we Christian Scientists of the twentieth century pursuing an understanding of Science because of what it will do for us? Or are we studying Science because we realize that it reveals Christ, Truth— "the living bread which came down from heaven" (John 6:51)—and demonstrates that Life is Spirit, God, the All-in-all?
If the former, then our thought is centered upon that false sense of existence which believes itself physical, human, and apart from God, and we are pursuing our own human welfare rather than following the Christ. But if the latter, then we are daily glimpsing—and yearning to know more of—the new heaven and new earth seen by St. John; and we are learning to be the kind of metaphysicians our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, longed to have us become.
In her sermon "Christian Healing," Mrs. Eddy says (p. 16): "Metaphysical Science teaches us there is no other Life, substance, and intelligence but God. How much are you demonstrating of this statement? which to you hath the most actual substance,— wealth and fame, or Truth and Love?" This is a searching question, one which we would do well to ask ourselves hourly.
