Our family has had proof that "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" (Ps. 46:1). I owe my life and that of our daughter to Christian Science. When I was very young, I was ill with smallpox and whooping cough and had reached the stage where I was delirious. The attending physician had called a consultation with several other physicians, who agreed that at most I had only twenty-four hours to live.
Mother had heard of Christian Science, but knew nothing about it. In desperation she telephoned a practitioner, who began explaining the truth of God and man, requested that the doctors be asked to give me no further medication, and encouraged Mother to leave me in God's care. In a few days I was completely well and unmarked by the smallpox. From that time on, we relied upon God for all healings.
I am sorry to say that for many years I did not study, and when a problem did arise, I depended upon the prayers of my parents or of a practitioner. After my marriage and the birth of our first child, I saw the need to know more of God and began to study Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. The laws of the state in which we were residing required a physician in attendance during childbirth. After our son was born, the physician said it would be physically impossible for me to have any more children.
