My introduction to Christian Science came when our oldest child was just five and had undergone surgery for double mastoiditis. Shortly after she returned home a complication developed, and she had to return to the hospital for a second operation.
When she was released from the hospital* the concerned surgeon asked if he might take her to his home for several days so that he could keep very close watch over the child. When he felt that she could come home, it was with the strict admonition that we must carefully guard against a cold or exposure to one.
In the ensuing months the child's ears would swell and the eardrums had to be punctured so many times that we became quite fearful that her hearing would be permanently damaged. Finally she contracted a fever and was so very ill that we were in despair.
