God Governs All Action

From the January 1967 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science reveals God as the omniactive and omnipresent divine Mind and man, God's image and likeness, as the perfect, active idea emanating from this Mind. In this Science we learn that man's true action is the individualized expression of God's action, just as man's life is the individualized expression of Life, which is God. Since man's being is an individualized manifestation of God's being, his action must be as unerring and continuous as God's action. The eternal, permanent nature of divine Mind is conferred upon its idea, man.

Christ Jesus, our beloved Master, said, "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work."John 5:17 His words contain a statement of profound spiritual truth. He was referring to God, the Father, as the source of all true action and to the Christ, his spiritual selfhood, as forever expressing or reflecting this action. Thus he indicated that man cannot have any action apart from God, that God's activity never comes to an end, and that therefore man in God's image and likeness never ceases to express his ever-operative divine Principle, or Mind. The spiritual understanding that Mind's action is forever evidenced by man and is inseparable from him enabled the Master to restore to active and useful lives the sick whose bodies had been crippled by the belief of life in matter.

It was the reading of the account of Jesus' healing of the palsied man in the ninth chapter of Matthew which enabled Mrs. Eddy to recover from a supposedly fatal accident. After she had received her healing, Mrs. Eddy made an inspired and thorough search of the Scriptures in order to find the divine law that lay back of her healing. She pursued her study of the Bible with untiring devotion and consecration, and thus the essential spiritual meaning of the Scriptural text was revealed to her.
