Conquering Fear

From the July 1967 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In terse language Mrs. Eddy states, "A man's fear, unconquered, conquers him, in whatever direction." Message to The Mother Church for 1901, p. 13; Such a simple, direct fact can speak volumes both in warning mortals regarding erroneous beliefs and in pointing the way to overcome the problems and sufferings of humanity. One of Jesus' responses to those who sought his aid was, "Be not afraid." Mark 5:36;

But one might naturally ask, "How can I conquer my fear? How can I obey Jesus' command?" An answer to these questions involves an understanding of the nature, presence, and power of God, divine Love. In his teaching and healing Jesus sought to portray the Christ, the divine nature of God, and to show how the Christ entering into human consciousness destroys fear and liberates the individual from his false beliefs, from sin and suffering.

There is certainly nothing to fear in the kingdom of God, in the realm of divine Love and eternal Truth. And Christian Science teaches that man in God's image and likeness dwells eternally in God's presence and under His care. This Science teaches that the ability to conquer fear rests on an understanding of God and of man's inseparable relation to Him. Each one of us can gain a knowledge of God, divine Principle, and learn of His government of the universe; and we can live in accord with this government and feel its control. This government is immediate and practical; it is intimate and individual. When Christ Jesus was speaking to his disciples about conquering fear, he said: "Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered." Matt. 10:29, 30;
