The Scope of Christian Science Healing

From the July 1967 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A recent survey on religion revealed that far too many people, due to their lack of knowledge of Christian Science, believe it to be primarily a substitute for medicine. When asked what they thought about Christian Scientists, their frequent reply was that these are the people who do not consult doctors when they are sick.

Of course this is true; Christian Scientists do not consult doctors or use drugs to heal disease. God is our great and only Physician, and through our understanding of Science we trust in Him exclusively. But making us well is only one aspect of the vast scope of Christian Science healing. It includes very much more. Its healing efficacy only begins with curing bodily discomfort.

For a Christian Scientist to believe that his religion is to be used only as a healing agent when he becomes sick, that he can take it off the shelf like a bottle of medicine and apply it to moments of physical suffering and then forget it when he feels better, looking to it only for ease in matter, is a serious mistake. Christian Science is his way of life to be lived, and loved, and worked at every moment of his day if the Scientist is to gain all that his mighty religion has for him.
