In my childhood and youth I attended a Christian Science Sunday School. During my college experience I drifted away from the teachings and study of Science. In the years following I smoked, drank socially, and resorted to materia medica. But in Galatians we read (5:9), "A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump."
The ever-presence of the leaven of Truth was proved to me later on in a time of great trial. Our teen-age son drank caustic soda. He was rushed to the hospital; the entire family was in a state of shock and confusion. The doctor, after doing what he could, advised my wife and me that the boy was in need of spiritual guidance. There was opposition to Science on the part of my wife, but I immediately called a Christian Science practitioner to give me prayerful support for spiritual guidance in this experience. As I began a daily study of the Lesson-Sermon, provided in the Christian Science Quarterly, together with references given me by the practitioner, fear was alleviated and replaced by much spiritual growth.
During this period the boy had one setback after another. An operation to be performed on the injured area was constantly delayed. The boy was also under psychological treatment, which was concluded when the doctor said that there was nothing he could do for the boy and that my wife and I could only hope.
