This revolt challenges the tyranny of belief in matter and supports its claims as did the Master, Christ Jesus, with undeniable proofs of spiritual power.
The leader of this revolt is a woman who is recognized today as one of the great benefactors of the human race. Her name is Mary Baker Eddy. She is the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, and her followers now circle the globe. She has given the world a book which has transformed thousands of human lives and healed countless cases of disease since the publication of its first edition in 1875.
This textbook, entitled Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, was placed before the public at a time when the advance of material science was discrediting many concepts of the Christian Church. Science and Health, with its key to the scientific meaning of the Scriptures, bridged the gap between science and religion. It showed that the theology of Jesus was an explanation of God's nature as divine Principle and that this theology operates through spiritual law. This law Jesus employed with precision and infallible results. His demonstration of this law in the healing of the sick and the sinner and in the raising of the dead provided the means for humanity's release from the tyranny of materialism.
