Better Sunday School Teaching

From the August 1967 issue of The Christian Science Journal

To do better teaching is the aim of every teacher in a Christian Science Sunday School. And he knows that the best way to do this is to be a better Christian Scientist. He recognizes the need to demonstrate his true selfhood as the reflection of God by expressing more humility and love, purifying thought, being more patient and understanding, and manifesting more joy and better health, more wisdom and insight.

The Challenge to Morality series in The Christian Science Monitor quoted Matthew W. Gaffney, formerly superintendent of schools in Tarrytown, New York, as saying to a group of schoolteachers, "You teach, not what you know, but what you are; and our children deserve the finest you have to offer." The Sunday School teacher finds that what he is expressing in thought and action outweighs mere words. He faces a stirring challenge to live Christian Science in order to teach successfully.

Obedience to the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy is an indispensable help to one endeavoring to improve his teaching. Article XX of the Manual deals specifically with the Sunday School. The teacher is alert to keep this Article before his thought as a guide to his Sunday School activity. It tells him what to teach and how to teach it. And it provides for maintaining the purity of the teaching.
