What Are the Heart's Desires?

From the August 1967 issue of The Christian Science Journal

As pleasing as it may be for us to dream of the heart's desires, most of us would be happier to have them realized. Why are they too often unfulfilled?

In the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy says, "We should examine ourselves and learn what is the affection and purpose of the heart, for in this way only can we learn what we honestly are." Science and Health, p. 8; Let us pause for a moment and think how we would respond if unexpectedly asked: "What do you want more than anything in the world? What truly are your heart's desires?" Our honest answer would reveal our affections and purposes to be either selfish or unselfed, giving evidence of material-mindedness or spiritual-mindedness.

The self-seeking heart is a sleeping one; it is asleep in the Adam-dream, for the individual is identifying himself as the man "formed . . . of the dust."Gen. 2:7; He has been deceived into believing he is a mortal dependent upon matter and mortals for happiness, sustenance, and security. The unselfed and loving heart is awake. This heart, or consciousness, aware of unity with the Life that is Love, and the Love that is Spirit, receives its happiness, sustenance, and security from Spirit, God.
