In today's experimental laboratories much has been discovered that is helpful in releasing humanity from archaic methods of work and eliminating menial tasks. However, published excerpts concerning some current experiments being conducted in the field of genetics state that "momentous scientific advances may soon give us godlike powers to tamper with the essential nature of man." Biological scientists declare that through manipulation of organic material and interchange of human parts, personal character and intelligence can be altered to meet certain human standards.
The complex problems these discoveries have thrust upon humanity raise questions. What is man's essential nature? Is it material or spiritual? Has the scientific laboratory nullified man's spiritual origin and has God become finite? The answer to these questions is to be found in divine Science, or Christian Science, which is based on an altogether different foundation than material science.
In Christian Science we find that man's essential nature is revealed through a right apprehension of Deity. God is known as eternal, infinite Mind, Life, Truth, Love, Spirit, Soul—an immutable, immortal Principle. These are synonyms which constitute the Godhead. Man, made in the image and likeness of God, is a spiritual entity, an idea reflecting and expressing His nature and essence. Therefore man cannot be a biochemical product. He is the embodiment of intelligence, goodness, integrity, right activity, unselfed love, beauty, and orderliness—all qualities which are real and true and untouched by discord or decay.
