Christian Science reveals that man is spiritual and immortal, forever embraced in the Father. This real man has no need of protection, since he is the perfect image of the perfect Mind, God. The understanding of this truth brings to one's human experience protection from evil, whether it be physical danger or disaster, the temptation to sin, or the silent influence of wicked minds. But to bring to light the safety of life in God demands the relinquishment of the belief of mortal selfhood, or life in the flesh, and the claiming of one's true selfhood as God's reflection. Then one comes under the law of good, which destroys the belief that man is a mortal.
Protection is gained from the conviction that God is the only presence, power, cause, and effect and that evil of every name or nature is an unreal belief. The writer could not sleep one night because of a strong sense of evil. She did faithful, prayerful work to overcome this aggressive suggestion until the early hours of the morning. She understood that because man is the reflection of God, he is inseparable from Him and cannot be touched by evil. As she claimed the absolute unity of God and man, and man's consequent immunity from evil, her fear was overcome, and she went to sleep.
Next morning a policeman came to her door and asked if all was well or if she had had any windows broken. Then she knew the reason for the sense of evil the previous night, and she was grateful that she had obeyed Mrs. Eddy's instruction, "It shall be the duty of every member of this Church to defend himself daily against aggressive mental suggestion, and not be made to forget nor to neglect his duty to God, to his Leader, and to mankind."
