One summer morning my chauffeur and I went to a remote quarry with two trucks to pick up raw materials. At the quarry I had an accident and sustained head injuries. I immediately declared that God was my Life, there, then, and always.
The suggestion came that the head injury could be fatal, but I resolutely rejected this as a lie and declared spiritual truths from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. Since my heart was also affected and I had to deal with fear, I sent the chauffeur home to my wife, asking him to tell her to call a Christian Science practitioner to give me treatment. I lay apparently helplessly alone on the ground, struggling with the belief of death; but in Christian Science we come to understand that God is an ever-present help, and I declared: "God is my Life," and, "I will praise Thee." In a little while I felt the effect of the practitioner's work, and I was able to get up and sit in the cab of my truck.
Upon his return, my chauffeur was surprised to find me sitting in the truck. He then drove me home where, for insurance purposes, I had to call a doctor. He requested that I be taken to the hospital immediately to be X-rayed. The diagnosis was a serious concussion of the brain, a fractured skull, damage to my hearing, and a disturbance of the equilibrium. These errors were met with the following statement (Science and Health, p. 544): "No mortal mind has the might or right or wisdom to create or to destroy." I realized that Life is purely spiritual and does not depend on matter, and I did not lose consciousness for a moment. Nor did I take any material remedies, either for the relief of pain or for healing.
