Testimonies of Healing

Our old family Bible, tightly clasped shut...

From the February 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Our old family Bible, tightly clasped shut and called the Book of Life, we regarded with ignorant awe. As a child what I saw of daily living seemed so complex and baffling that I often wondered why someone didn't find out what was in the Book of Life and learn a better way of living.

During my teens and early twenties this wondering grew into a silent, urgent search, until I found Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I didn't understand much of it because of prejudice against what I thought Christian Science was. But thanks to the patient practitioners whose faithful work and love steadied me, prejudice was replaced with true knowledge. The search was ended, and I learned to study with full joy in and appreciation of Mrs. Eddy's clear understanding of the Bible and her dedication to the task of opening it for all to understand through her revelation of the Science of the Christ. I learned that reading and rereading the authorized biographies of Mrs. Eddy helps to keep her and her work in proper perspective, and this is indispensable to progress and demonstration.

I have had many healings in Christian Science. At one time I was required to do some work in a field of activity which I felt I had outgrown. This demanded hours of preparation and was accompanied with rebellion, resentment, and the stubborn belief that it was a retrograde step. I had completely missed the point that each experience presents an opportunity for growth. And so during a five-hundred-mile drive alone to the town where the work was to be performed, I had ample time to think and to pray for the unfoldment of the right concept. Upon arrival I was grateful to be able to look upon the work as an opportunity instead of an imposition. Resentment and rebellion melted, and the work was done under God's guidance successfully and was most appreciatively received. On the way back home I discovered that a very ugly and sore growth on one of my fingers had disappeared.
