I have been blessed with having had Christian Science as my religion all my life, but when I found I was expecting a child, I was also quickened with an insatiable hunger and thirst for a greater understanding of Science. For the next year and a half nearly every spare minute was spent searching and studying, and I was rewarded.
Because of the prayerful work of a practitioner I experienced no labor pains at the birth of my son, who was then a month overdue. A most comforting statement during that last month was, "Patience must 'have her perfect work'" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 454). I knew that the appearance of a spiritual idea of God can only be harmonious and that the idea can only be perfect.
One day while at work I felt as though I were losing consciousness and experienced severe pain in the region of my heart. I became fearful, but immediately the voice of Truth told me that this experience was not happening to the real me, who is spiritual and not dependent on heart and blood for life. When the attack was over, the left side of my body was affected and also my speech. I had been alone, so no one was aware that anything had taken place; but I immediately asked to be relieved of my switchboard duties and left for home. By the time I arrived home I was rather incoherent, but I managed to call a practitioner for help. After talking to her I fell into a sleep and awoke about two and one half hours later in time to call her at three o'clock, as she had asked me to. My voice was free and strong, and by the end of the day the rest of my body was fairly free. I missed only one day's work.
