Obedience Is the Demand of Love

From the September 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

If one wishes to be successful in a line of endeavor, he must adhere strictly to the rules. When one is working out problems in mathematics, not the slightest divergence from the rules is admissible. The harmony of music is adulterated if one note is misplayed.

Likewise, Christian Science, the divine Principle of which is Love, demands absolute obedience to its rules for one to realize success in its healing ministry. Our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, says: "Since the author's discovery of the might of Truth in the treatment of disease as well as of sin, her system has been fully tested and has not been found wanting; but to reach the heights of Christian Science, man must live in obedience to its divine Principle. To develop the full might of this Science, the discords of corporeal sense must yield to the harmony of spiritual sense, even as the science of music corrects false tones and gives sweet concord to sound." Science and Health, Pref., pp. vii, viii;

A demand would not be just if it were impossible of attainment or too difficult to understand. But this is not the case in divine Science. What God demands of us is for our greatest good and is the quickest and most successful way of obtaining our objective—the harmony of spiritual reality.
