The many blessings I have had from the testimonies of healing published in the Christian Science periodicals lead me to tell what this marvelous religion has done for me. More than twenty years ago I was afflicted with pulmonary tuberculosis considered to be hereditary, and from which my mother and several members of her family had passed on.
I had to stop working, and, in accordance with the labor laws, I submitted to medical treatment and periodic examinations. Life seemed to hold no future for me, and the fact of becoming suddenly inactive was most depressing.
Knowing of my state, my stepmother took me to a couple with whom she was acquainted, people who she knew were accomplishing healings in the way in which Jesus healed, without medicine and through prayer. I remained there and was with them when they daily read from the Bible and from another book, which was Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. The idea was gradually becoming clear to me that man is not a product of matter. I remember the great impressiveness with which the words read on Sundays at the end of the service held in that couple's living room rang in my ears: "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God"; and then the end of this citation, "And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure" (I John 3:1-3). The predominant thought for me then was, "This I can do — have hope!"
