"To bless all mankind"

From the September 1971 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The first issue of The Christian Science Monitor rolled off the press on the morning of November 25, 1908, carrying in its lead editorial the statement by its founder, Mrs. Eddy, "The object of the Monitor is to injure no man, but to bless all mankind." The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 353; From early in its history' the Monitor was called "An international daily newspaper," a designation indicating not only that its content is international in scope, but that copies of this extraordinary newspaper are intended to reach the far places of the globe, bearing its unique blessing literally to "all mankind."

The Christly love that impelled the Monitor's advent might be said to echo the Scriptural verses: "God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved." John 3:16, 17;

God's great love for His creation has in every age brought into the world the saving idea of Truth in a form the particular age could accept. The Christ-idea appeared to the receptive consciousness of patriarch and prophet even before the advent of Jesus of Nazareth, whose identity so mirrored forth the true idea that he was given the title Messiah or Christ. Mrs. Eddy founded the Christian Science movement to express this same love of God. The Christian Science Monitor fills an important role in the saving activity of our church. It is sent into the world each day not to exploit and condemn but to enlighten, encourage, warn — to save mankind from current forms of evil.
