Defending the Unity of Church

From the September 1971 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One of the most recurring themes of our time is conflict. Nearly everywhere we look in society today we are confronted by a sense of division and strife.

Christian Science presents the only permanent basis there can be for unity—the spiritual, perfect individuality of man in the likeness of Spirit, God. This is why it is the institution that can best fill the individual's and society's need for unity.

In 1967, The Christian Science Board of Directors established as one of its spiritual goals the demonstration of "greater love and unity throughout the movement." They pointed out that in proportion as church members freely express love and demonstrate unity with each other they will attract the stranger to their doors. They will provide in concrete example the very thing the community needs most, what individuals everywhere in the world are now actively seeking in their own experience.
