Christian Science, in its very simplest, sweetest terms, was the power which rooted out of me years of earthbound conviction that lack, failure, and frustration were a way of life. I began to study Christian Science and attend Sunday School and church services shortly after I graduated from high school. This Science had great appeal to me because it made God very real, Christ Jesus alive and lovable, and life itself more promising. I needed such assurances.
At this point in my life the one goal that seemed all-important to me was to go to college. However, my many inadequacies seemed overwhelming. On page 371 of Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy points out that "the necessity for uplifting the race is father to the fact that Mind can do it." Certainly the need for uplifting my own consciousness was very great. Regularly, earnestly, I studied the Lesson-Sermon. When I heard of a Christian Science lecture to be given in our town, I was at the door an hour early. I made a great effort to understand, and gradually I became convinced of God's goodness. Slowly He became more real to me than the discordant conditions which had been so stultifying.
After three years of striving, and with the dawn of absolute conviction that God was preparing the way for me, I heaved my suitcase into a friend's well-used pickup truck and headed for a totally different way of life. A very happy college experience was the first step. Here I learned to make stronger demands upon Christian Science.
