I am deeply grateful that my mother enrolled my two sisters and me in a Christian Science Sunday School when we were very young, for it was here that the Bible, and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, became my most precious friends.
Throughout my school years I drew upon the truths I was learning, and often through my own understanding and prayer I was able to effectively meet and overcome physical problems. Two healings in particular have stayed with me—that of a nest of unsightly warts, and a swollen, stiff knee, which made any activity, even walking, painful and difficult. As I became convinced of the necessity to see myself consistently as expressing freedom, flexibility, and completeness of thought, the painful knee and its swelling was healed and gave me no further difficulty.
At one time I recall praying to know myself as a pure child of God. Mrs. Eddy says this about purity (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 262): "God creates man perfect and eternal in His own image. Hence man is the image, idea, or likeness of perfection—an ideal which cannot fall from its inherent unity with divine Love, from its spotless purity and original perfection." I vigorously denied the presence of anything that did not express good, God. It was shortly after this firm declaration of my God-maintained perfection that I discovered the warts had vanished, leaving my skin clear and smooth.
