Primary Class Instruction and the Healing Tone

From the April 1973 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"It is a question to-day," writes Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health, "whether the ancient inspired healers understood the Science of Christian healing, or whether they caught its sweet tones, as the natural musician catches the tones of harmony, without being able to explain them." Science and Health, pp. 144, 145; How much better, one might say, to be taught to catch the "sweet tones" of Christian healing—at least to have a start of systematic teaching—than to depend on individual study and natural aptitude alone! And this is possible today. Now that the healings of early Christian times are once again taking place through Christian Science, there is a provision for instruction in a formal way that is demonstrably effective.

Primary class instruction in Christian Science, as this teaching is called, can be as helpful to the progress of the Christian healer as instruction in voice is to the singing ability of one who would be a musician.

The voice instructor knows the pure vocal tone and therefore recognizes it when it is produced by the pupil. One might take this as a hint of what occurs in class instruction. Holding his thought to the true tone of the divine Mind—of Truth, Life, and Love—and resting his consciousness upon this divine Principle, the teacher of Christian Science is able to help the individual pupil in the right direction spiritually, just as the instructor of voice, knowing the pure tone in singing, is able to develop his pupil musically. Of spiritual instructors Mrs. Eddy writes, "The tone of the teacher's mind must be pure, grand, true, to aid the mental development of the student; for the tint of the instructor's mind must take its hue from the divine Mind."Miscellaneous Writings, p. 264;
