Testimonies of Healing

"A Christian Scientist! Me? Never...

From the August 1973 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"A Christian Scientist! Me? Never— I could never be a Christian Scientist!" These were the words I exclaimed to my prospective husband seven years ago. Today, as a member of The Mother Church and a branch church, I have something different to say! For my husband's enthusiastic example and patience in introducing me to this regenerating religion, and for the growth achieved through active participation in a Christian Science college organization early in my study, I am grateful beyond expression. Class instruction from a consecrated and inspiring teacher soon after I began practicing this Science has been a firm foundation on which to build.

Healings of colds, influenza, an infected wisdom tooth, back sprain, muscle spasm, and protection while driving, have been proof to me that Christian Science works. The day before I was honored at a pre-wedding shower, I ran into a heavy chair while running barefoot. Although no medical diagnosis was made, one toe appeared to be broken, as it was bent out of its normal shape and was swollen several times its usual size. At once I began praying to demonstrate the truth of these words (Science and Health, p. 14): "Become conscious for a single moment that Life, and intelligence are purely spiritual,—neither in nor of matter,—and the body will then utter no complaints."

The Bible Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly that week was on Love, and before I finished studying it, I felt so much God-derived love was being expressed around me—the love of my parents and my love for them, the love of the man I was about to marry—that I became wonderfully conscious of the love of God for His children, and I knew I was a part of that love. No human circumstance could jar me into believing that the real man can be broken away from God. I bounded out of the chair, put on loose house slippers, and continued my activities. All pain disappeared when I replaced a sense of fear with a recognition of God's love. The next day the swelling was gone, and the toe was normal. At the shower I walked without limping or discomfort in a pair of high-heeled shoes. In a few weeks the discoloration disappeared, removing all physical trace of the experience.
