Testimonies of Healing

As a young person I had a natural trust...

From the August 1974 issue of The Christian Science Journal

As a young person I had a natural trust in good. In time this was challenged, and I found the teachings of the church I attended did not answer my questions or help solve my problems. After I had spent four years at a university, confusion had replaced my early faith. While at the university, I met a student of Christian Science who expressed many outstanding qualities. Through the study and practice of his religion he was healed of food poisoning, smoking, and a small growth. I was impressed with these healings and attended the services of a Christian Science Society with him. However, I was still not certain about becoming a student of this religion myself.

We were married our last year of school, and after graduating we moved to a large midwestern city. When our first child was expected, I was ready to learn more about my husband's religion, and decided to talk to a Christian Science practitioner. From her clear explanations of God and man came a deep conviction to me that Christian Science is the truth. I disposed of the pills and vitamins prescribed earlier by a medical doctor, and with the help of the practitioner began to study in earnest. The immediate results of this were a healing of the need to wear reading glasses and of a skin condition which had bothered me since my early teens. Problems associated with pregnancy also disappeared.

Soon after this I became seriously ill and could not walk. When this did not yield right away, to be obedient to state law we called in the physician who had been engaged to deliver the baby. He told the practitioner that the illness was polio. He acknowledged that her prayerful work had met the acute phase of the disease, but he told my husband later that at this time he did not expect I would ever walk again. The doctor kindly left us to continue to rely completely on Christian Science. When care was necessary during the day, it was provided by a Christian Science nurse.
