Looking Behind Language to Spiritual Ideas

From the August 1974 issue of The Christian Science Journal

While things that are true from a human point of view may be expressed in the human language of speech or writing, or mathematical symbols, or whatever, divine Truth—absolutely speaking—expresses itself in purely spiritual ideas. These may be hinted at or conveyed in human language with magnificent beauty and clarity, as they are in Mrs. Eddy's book Science and Health, which contains the full statement of Christian Science. But Truth itself is forever divine, not humanly verbal.

It advances our demonstration of Christian Science to understand this. Words give us essential access to spiritual ideas— as we prove each time we study Christian Science. This article is dependent on words for expression. Nevertheless, we should grow spiritually to the point where we drop any tendency simply to look for the "magic" phrase or statement—rather than opening our thoughts to the apt spiritual idea or quality of being which we hope will be the key to a healing or correction of some kind. (Of course, should we be under sudden or unusual pressure from a problem, the repetition of scientific words may be required initially in order to lift us to the spiritual conviction we need.)

Probably all of us at some time have found what we believed to be the right cluster of words—without grasping the underlying divine ideas—and have trusted exclusively in those words. We may have let them rattle around in our thought, hoping they would bring about improvement. But Mrs. Eddy tells us: "Words are not always the auxiliaries of Truth. The spirit, and not the letter, performs the vital functions of Truth and Love." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 260;
