The Challenge

From the August 1974 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A world without poverty, without strife, and without fear—this is possible in proportion as we accept the challenge of Christ Jesus, "Follow me." Matt. 4:19;

Jesus' approach to all human problems was, "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work." John 5:17; Whatever he did, his purpose was to do the will of his Father, God. To follow Jesus means to have the same purpose. And we have his promise that although some things are impossible to men alone, "with God all things are possible."Matt. 19:26;

Many things seem impossible, but Christian Science explains seeming impossibilities as inherent in the belief and dream of material living. In this belief and dream, such a problem as poverty is too vast to be comprehended by the human mind. Or if it could be comprehended, its solution would appear to require unthinkable sacrifices. Here, too, strife is regarded as normal among mortals, most of whom are basically selfish. And fear is seen not only as a natural reaction to the conditions of a material universe, but also as a protection against danger—even though it results in disease and death.
