At the age of sixty-two, after recuperating from surgery and suffering from angina, I was compelled to retire from my position as chief design engineer in a manufacturing plant. The following year my wife and I moved to California to live in retirement on a much more limited income than that to which we had been accustomed.
I underwent medication for heart disease and high blood pressure. I also suffered from gout, arthritis, and an infection of the urinary tract. After three different confinements in the hospital and with a fast diminishing bank account, my aggravation was observed by good neighbors, who gave me a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I had not been enamored with religion because pertinent questions I had asked had not been answered to my satisfaction.
After I read this volume and Mrs. Eddy's other writings, the pains in my chest vanished and I discontinued use of all medicines. In Mrs. Eddy's writings I found the truth that man, as the image or reflection of God, is free of sin, disease, and death. These have no reality in spiritual creation. The wonderful healings testified to, accomplished through an understanding of God, assured me that I could be well.
