Healing by Deepening Our Sense of Reality

From the February 1975 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Mary Baker Eddy's remarkable healing work was the result of a deep, luminous spirituality. It enabled her to reflect the curative harmony of God, divine Love. Whereas in most instances her followers, through the process of mental reasoning and argument, need to lift their thought to the point of spiritual realization, she could attain it quickly and effectively. Her thought was so in tune with the healing warmth of divine Love, so deeply conscious of the all-pervading concord of infinite Soul, that disease and discord simply disappeared from the thought and experience of those who came to her for help. She tells us, "Christian Science silences human will, quiets fear with Truth and Love, and illustrates the unlabored motion of the divine energy in healing the sick."Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 445;

Although Mrs. Eddy was a consistently successful spiritual healer she did not allow vanity or self-righteousness to personalize her healing work or blind her to the omnipotence and omnipresence of the healing divine Principle, God, of whom she was but the reflected expression. She recognized herself to be the humble follower of the master Metaphysician, Christ Jesus, and this meekness penetrated the opacity of egotism and faith in matter, making her thought a clear transparency for the healing light of Truth.

Like Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, a student of this Science—if he would experience healing—needs to go deep in his metaphysical work and thoroughly overhaul and uplift his concept of both God and man. He soon learns that doing this is not a psychological process. It's not what is called "positive thinking." In fact, he begins to see that rather than being a healing agent, the mortal, or carnal, mind is actually the cause of disease or limitation. It's a mistaken sense of mind, and one mistake cannot correct another.
