What can a book written a hundred years ago do to affect the problems of poverty in the late twentieth-century world?
A book that springs from the design of the creative Mind, divine intelligence, God, can accomplish much. Ignorance, selfishness, greed, superstition, stifling tradition, apathy, are the causes of poverty. But none of these can prevent the action of divine intelligence in human consciousness. Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health: "Intelligence is omniscience, omnipresence, and omnipotence. It is the primal and eternal quality of infinite Mind, of the triune Principle,—Life, Truth, and Love, —named God."Science and Health, p. 469;
Christ Jesus illustrated the limitless possibilities of intelligence flowing from the divine Mind, and he said, "I can of mine own self do nothing,"John 5:30; and "The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do."v. 19; It was Jesus' relationship to his Father, God, that enabled him to do the work he did. And in our day it is the relationship of a book to the divine Mind that enables it to accomplish good in this world.
