Has anybody ever really seen a 2? No, because the symbol is not the actuality. We know that an Arab and an Englishman would use entirely different symbols for the same concept, but the actual identity of the number remains unchanged and is quite independent of any material connotations or limitations. Similarly, an Arab and an Englishman present different human concepts. But look at the real man and the real universe: they are spiritual, perfect, unchanging, eternal ideas of God.
The whole of human existence is a symbolic enigma, and that is why so many people are asking, "Who or what am I, and what is life all about?"
St. Paul said, "We look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal." II Cor. 4:18; Those who say they believe only what they can perceive through the material senses are blind to reality. There are innumerable identities, ideas, concepts, qualities, and quantities that exist beyond the ken of material sight, touch, or sound —even beyond the perception of matter-based thinking.
