It was a motley group, brought together for the wedding. Suddenly the host's voice rose above the others. "Friend," he said to one of the guests, "how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment?" Matt. 22:12;
This might seem like a rude way for a guest to be treated. After all, is it so important what people wear to a wedding? But then this particular incident never really happened. It was related in a parable told by Jesus.
The parables of Jesus go beyond the literal to a deeper meaning. So it's reasonable to ask, What significance can I find in this incident to help me today? What might the missing wedding garment really signify? Surely much more than an article of clothing. Wouldn't it more likely be something intangible—a state of thought, of right-mindedness?
