Beyond Failure, Success

From the March 1977 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The effectiveness of the truth of being, as explained in Christian Science, has been proved too often to be fairly questioned. Suppose, though, we've experienced a time when—to our sense of things—truth was not fully demonstrated. Or our turning to Truth may not have brought the improvement we'd hoped for, and we may have considered our application of Science to have failed altogether.

While integrity may sometimes ask us to recognize what looks like a failure in the application of Science, it also asks that we look over and beyond the rim of seeming failure. For the end of the story is that God, divine Truth, being omnipotent, is always victorious over every apparent imperfection. The Bible says reassuringly, "The Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee." Deut. 31:6;

Mary Baker Eddy, who proved in her own life and in many healings the effectiveness of Truth, dealt with the challenge some Scientists may face of inadequate or delayed successes. Comparing healers of her day with those of Bible times she remarks: "In some instances the students of Christian Science equal the ancient prophets as healers. All true healing is governed by, and demonstrated on, the same Principle as theirs; namely, the action of the divine Spirit, through the power of Truth to destroy error, discord of whatever sort. The reason that the same results follow not in every case, is that the student does not in every case possess sufficiently the Christ spirit and its power to cast out the disease."
