The Resiliency of True Friendship

From the March 1977 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One of the suggestions of animal magnetism is disruption of sound friendships. We read in the book of Proverbs, "A whisperer separateth chief friends." Prov. 16:28; There are few more descriptive terms for ignorant or malicious mental suggestion than that of "whisperer."

What are some of the whispers that tend to divisiveness? Hurt feelings, pride, rivalry —they are legion. If such lies are accepted, they can be corruptive and destructive to all that is noble in human relationships.

True friendship is always resilient, that is, capable of enduring shock. When a rubber ball is thrown to the ground, there is a momentary compression in its form, but it rebounds almost instantly to resume its natural spherical shape. Similarly, there may be occasional, temporary dents in human relationships, but if the spiritual resiliency of Christly love is exercised, there will be sufficient "bounce" for friends to withstand any permanent damage to their friendship.
