Defending Our Place of Worship

From the March 1977 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Although it would be unusual to find armed guards stationed at places of worship throughout the world, it wouldn't be so unusual to find them at banks, military establishments, or in some industries.

But churches, mosques, pagodas, and synagogues have not generally been institutions in need of defense. In fact, most places of worship are likely to have open arms to all those seeking a closer relationship with God.

And yet defense is needed, not of a building but of a much more fundamental place of worship—the place Christ Jesus pointed to when he said, "The true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth." John 4:23; As Jesus knew, true worship of God is more than outward worship. It is heartfelt communion with God deep within consciousness. We enter our true place of worship moment by moment as we are consciously receptive to His presence.
