Church in Action News and Announcements

Gentle encouragement for strong self-reliance

From the March 1977 issue of The Christian Science Journal

With increasing frequency workers at headquarters and Scientists active in the Field are asking themselves the questions: "Is it basically conditions, persons, a world 'out there' that need changing, or is it a concept that needs spiritualizing? Should our prayers and concerns be more universal?"

A Mother Church member living in the eastern United States got answers to questions like these when struggling with an attack of influenza. While praying to know what more he needed to do, he picked up a copy of the Monitor, read about a civil war in Africa, and then turned his thought to what was truly happening in God's universe. The Monitor headline was a tocsin, an alert to recognize more clearly that man's spiritual individuality is intact and inviolate. As this was done, the flu disappeared.

The Monitor is just one of several channels of communication that aid The Mother Church in its role of providing information and inspiration to nurture, protect, and heal.
