"Be of good cheer; the warfare with one's self is grand; it gives one plenty of employment, and the divine Principle worketh with you,—and obedience crowns persistent effort with everlasting victory." So writes Mrs. Eddy in Miscellaneous Writings (p. 118).
This was proved to me when I was a comparatively new branch church member and new student in Christian Science. I was asked to do something that seemed to me impossible. I had much to be grateful for but had never been able to give a testimony. Our branch church had an active and growing membership, and we were building a new auditorium. Regular monthly membership meetings were held.
I was serving on The Christian Science Monitor circulation committee when the chairman informed us that our committee had been chosen to conduct the next membership meeting; that she had arranged a program and had put me on for a five minute talk on the subject, "Spiritual Growth Through Committee Work." The prospect of talking five long minutes to the enlightened membership such as we had, and on a subject about which I knew nothing, was terrifying. At the earliest possible moment I informed the chairman that I would love to do this but it was beyond my ability. She assured me that I could and that I had four weeks to prepare for it.
